The Basic 12 for Singers
“You must master these first 2, or you have nothing.”- My Dad, Rick Williams
You must sound good on your own, yet also be able to blend with and sound good with a group.
Practice, Practice, Practice, then practice some more.
Keep Your Love for the Music.
Learn to sing 125 Songs - Lead and Harmony.
Record Yourself and listen to the playback, it may sound strange at first, but keep recording yourself and tailor your singing until you sound right on playback.
Learn to properly express vowels and consonants.
Warm up before practice / performance with vocal scales and exaggerated facial Expressions / Stretches.
Learn to listen; it is the most crucial skill you will learn. Make a habit of listening to other singers to deconstruct their technique, learn to imitate the good stuff!!
Sing with your diagram, not your throat.
Find a focal point to
direct your voice, usually center of the forehead to the nose - 6 to 10 inches
out in front of your center point. Direct your voice at the diaghram of the microphone when using a mic.
The best vocal instructor I ever knew (Mr. Swanson, a public school teacher.) would always say: “If you can talk, you can sing.” I believe he was right, so raise your voices!
How do you make it to Carnegie Hall? …. Practice, Practice, Practice.
